Allamanda is often referred to as Allamanda Vine. It is not a vine as it does not cling, twine, or climb. It is really a very leggy shrub but different varieties come in different degrees of “legginess.” Brown Bud is the classic with big yellow flowers and a very leggy habit. Like all the Allamanda it is pretty tropical and blooms in mid summer. This delayed blooming is probably one of the reasons sales have not been too snappy on these plants. People buy them in spring and get tired of waiting for the flower. A little education might go a long way on these beautiful plants. If we use them as midsummer tropical specimens they can bring the Caribbean into the Chicago patio.
